Barney died last night.

Barney, Barney, Barney

Ought to just rename this blog to "Barney."

His blood cell count was indeed low: about 8, whereas a healthy cat is above 30. He is also showing jaundice from not having eaten.

He's getting another blood transfusion (probably even as I type this). The vet is going to insert a feeding tube to get food in him until he is strong enough to eat on his own again. Then, probably around Wednesday, she's going to open up his belly to eyeball his guts. Hopefully, she'll find the root problem that way.

For those of you entertaining dark notions about where the blood for the transfusions comes from: You can relax. They keep a couple cats of their own at the clinic as pets, and they simply draw blood off of them whenever they need it (but no more than once a month for any given cat). All domestic cats except for a few of the more exotic breeds have the same blood type, so pretty much any cat owned by any willing member of the staff can be used as a donor.

I'm going to try to give Binky a lot of attention until I hear back from the vet about Barney. I've been neglecting him.

It's looking really bad. He is so weak, he can barely stand up. I've been feeding him cream and water with a syringe to keep him going. Yesterday I cleaned pee off of his belly and his legs because he didn't get up to go to the litter box. I'm waiting to hear from the vet because she wanted to see him today anyway and said she would come pick me up during her lunch break because she felt sorry for me for having to walk a mile and a half to get there.

I'm hoping he is weak because his blood count has dropped again...that at least can be temporarily fixed with another blood transfusion, which would give us another five days or so to figure out why he is sick.
